Environmental Group

The Environment Group plan to convert the old dump into a public park to everyone’s benefit. This ‘landfill’ site, of approximately 3 acres, is an area of ground that separates Portside and La Rochelle/Rosmore and can be accessed through Kirwan’s Garden. This is a 10 year plan which will be developed over a number of phases with a lot of preparatory work ongoing with the County Council. Phase 1 will begin this year with the clearing of part of the ground to convert into Garden allotments for the Active Retirement Group. Over time, the remainder of the site will be converted into a nature park of native planting with some wetland and with a strong emphasis on wildlife and biodiversity. Full disabled access throughout is planned. This will be a decided asset to the area and as in the case of the Memorial Park, we anticipate the full backing of the community.
The Environment Group will hold a public meeting in Hotel Rosslare on Thursday 23rd June at 8pm to outline their plans, to consider people’s opinions and to discuss their concerns. We expect that a number of interested groups who may wish to have their ideas included in the plans will also attend. A full turn out is requested.

National Spring Clean Day

National Spring Clean Day in Rosslare Harbour & Kilrane this year is on Saturday 16th of April. This gives the local community an opportunity to get our fine beach and villages looking their best for the summer months and prepare ourselves for the Tidy Towns Competition. We would ask that all members of the Kilrane/Rosslare Harbour Environmental Group together with volunteers meet in the car park of St.Patrick's Church at 10am. It would be great if you could spare an hour or two to help with this worthwhile project. You will be made very welcome.

Thank you to Hotel Rosslare for their hospitality and to our auctioneer’s Des Murphy, Billy Roche, Larry Byrne and our own Mick Delaney. The event raised €1,400 and this will go towards our running cost’s in the year ahead. Thanks to one and all.

Tidy Towns Competition

We anticipate the arrival of adjudicators for the Tidy towns competition over the coming weeks – around the week of the Summer Festival. Now is the time to get the walls painted, the hedges cut and the gardens looking good. The work of the Environment Group is beginning to show improvements around the area and we need everyone to do their bit to support them at this time. See the pics for the nice new entrance to Kirwans garden and the childrens visit. Well done to Carol O' Brien and 4th class in Kilrane NS on their visit to Kirwan’s Garden and a special thank you to Betty Kehoe and Mick Clancy for their expert help.

Overall impression is good when houses and gardens are well kept, litter is picked up by us all, weeds are controlled, and there is no need to remark on the number of temporary signs that always spring up along the road around this time.

Well done to you who have already done your bit and we offer every encouragement to others who have it in mind to power hose or paint that wall, spray those weeds, or clean up that patch of ground that looks unsightly.

The Environment Group will continue to do their bit to maintain and improve the environment but we need everyone to commit to a community spirit and pride that is there and is evident in our improving landscape. Keep up the good work!
